Tasting Notes
On the way to Tehran we were enraptured(metaphorically, uh) by the heady scents of this spring black tea, from an area little known for tea cultivation. Produced from relatively young plants, developed from seeds of Camellia Sinensis var. Sinensis, its leaves were harvested in early April. This is the first harvest of the year and the processing is somewhat reminiscent of Darjeeling first flush black tea, but with different processing parameters: a 50 percent withering and an oxidation time of about 45 minutes. This preserves the freshest, most floral aromas and ensures an excellent aromatic balance between varietal and oxidative components. Put simply: the “original” plant aromas and those developed during oxidation are both present and in excellent balance, bringing richness and aromatic complexity.
Oh, I mean, it’s very good!
The experience opens under the banner of delicate scents. Fresh suggestions of rosemary emerge from the bag, while placing the leaves in the heated teapot peep a warm aroma of bread crust, accompanied by almondy traces. Once the leaves are infused, we encounter intense suggestions of fresh flowers (geranium) with hints of rose and magnolia. This is the prelude to the entry into town of a procession of aromas (imagine the scene of Aladdin entering Agrabah), consisting of a sweet aroma chestnut honey, almond milk and buttery notes reminiscent of shortbread cookies. Finally we have the grand arrival of notes of fig compote followed in closing by the return of vegetal notes of herbs (rosemary) and an intriguing nuance reminiscent of tomato leaf.
A sweet-tasting tea with delicate savory undertones. The body is medium-structured with a velvety texture. A pleasant salivation accompanies the entire sip to a dry, refreshing and persistent finish.
Very versatile, it is suitable both for breakfast and for a moment of meditation to discover hidden gems that lurk in areas less known for tea production.
Playing with infusion times, you can choose whether to opt for a more delicate and floral character (around 2 minutes), more intense and enveloping (sticking to 3 minutes) or more balanced by staying in between. In short, one tea of a thousand (and one night) shades!
